opening alerts from mail, chat and micrblogging

When getting an alert for email, chat or twitter the envelope in the upper right corner gets a color. That's great. But when I select the alert from the drop down menu, I'm not taken to the application if it is already open in another workspace. Is there a way around it? So that, when I get mail, and I select it from the drop down menu, I get taken to the workspace where evolution is open?
