Disable the mail and instant message status icons without removing Sound and Logoff icons" for indicator-applet in ubuntu

Asked by Leo

I don't like Evolution and I have no sympathy for Empathy.

Since Lucid, I have been gently forced to have that mail icon on my Notification Area.

Besides, I have also been gently forced to have the Instant Message status handler.

How can I remove those icons, without automatically removing Sound (which I really want to be there) and Logoff (which I really really want to be there)?

I filed a bug about this but it was tagged Invalid.

Looks like bothe changes were deliberate.

Here is a workaround:
sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages indicator-me

You are right, the changes were deliberate. Currently, the only way to remove the menus is via your workaround.

The indicators are currently being reworked though and split up → see the MeMenu etc.
