keymagic keyboard for Malayalam Transliteration fails

Asked by C.Mohan

I was able to use keymagic keyboard and use Mozhi scheme in earlier Versions of Ubuntu including UbuntuStudio 18.04 and use IBus with ibus-m17n , m17n-contrib installation and setting up the language and Keyboard accordingly.

With Ubuntu 19.4 , the command sudo apt-get -f install ibus ibus-m17n, m17n-contrib, m17n-db always fails with an error stating m17n-contrib is obselete. I cannot setup Ibus keyboard for transliteration. Please help and guide.

I can use Malayalam Transliteration without any issues in Ubuntu 18.10 with the following steps:
1.Install all available updates after initial Installation of Ubuntu 18.10 on the target hard disk
2. Install ibus-m17n m17n-contrib m17n-db using the Terminal 'apt-get install ' command
3.. Add Malayalam in Language Support in addition to English the Primary language
4. Select Ibus as the keyboard Input System
5. Using Settings-> Region and Language -> Input Sources->Other select and save Malayalam (Mozhi(m17n))
6. Run ibus-setup
7.In Startup Applications , edit and add ibus with command ibus-daemon.
8. The Top Panel will show Ibus keyboard with added Malayalam (mozhi(m17))
9. Transliteration works on all with the required Unicode Malayalam Fonts.
10. Using the above steps in Ubuntu 19.04 and 19.10, I get an error about m17n -contribute as obsolete and I cannot proceed to complete the Ibus setup and use Malayalam.

m17n-contrib was a transitional package not providing anything but a dependency on m17n-db.
If you have m17n-db installed, then adding m17n-contrib does not do anything.
Thus it cannot be the cause of your problem.

"I cannot proceed to complete the Ibus setup and use Malayalam."
What happens, if you try? Which one of the steps fails?

Thank you for your answer. I began to think in the same way. I proceeded with installing just ibus-m17n and m17n-db following this and I proceeded with other steps to configure Malayalam Mozhi input succeeding to launch the Ibus keyboard with en and Malayalam (mozhi(m17n)) keyboard.

I was happy it worked out well .

I appreciate the advice I got from https://launchpad.net/~tychokdickerson and https://launchpad.net/~m-hampl

I have created a write up with screen shots of a short "Howto for installing Mozhi Malayalam input for Ubuntu 19.10 " and hope to add to the forum as my gesture for the helpful responses I received.

This can be Closed as Solved.
