Wavy Output to CRT Monitor

Asked by Philip Paquette

Using Dell Inspiron 700m,

Installed Ubuntu Dapper
Installed i810switch

Resolution is 1280x800

When I output to a CRT monitor (i810switch crt on lcd on), it is very wavy.

Any idea why and how to fix?

This sounds like the vertical and/or horizontal refresh rate is too high for your CRT monitors. Newer monitors with "digital" on screen displays generally have a system that prevents them from operating under these conditions (they will simply show a message on screen stating that the refresh rate is incorrect, then turn off).

You will need to reduce your refresh rate (to say, 60Hz) when using your CRT monitor. You can use the Screen Resolution preferences (System > Preferences > Screen Resolution) to do this. Do note that under some conditions, operating your monitor with a refresh rate that is too high can damage your monitor.

If problems persist after the reduced refresh rate, try reducing your screen resolution as well.

Didn't fix it.

I outputed at 1280x800 (60Hz) and then at 1024x768 (60Hz) and the problem still occurred. Probably some misconfiguration of the i810

Problem fixed by modifying my xorg.conf file
