System->hardware test crashes system

I have a darter 12 inch laptop (daru3). I have had problems getting some video
programs to work (VLC, and mplayer) without crashing the system. I ran the
system, hardware test program available under the system, administration
menus. It tests sound, then moves on to video. The video test crashes the system.
Should this test run successfully? Oh, and I have seen a few postings about issues
with ubuntu 8.04 and Intel x4500HD video . Someone mentioned that a later alpha
release of ubuntu may address this.

We've had other reports of that particular application crashing with the X4500 graphics chip.
