Ubuntu 8.04 Hardware Testing results on Launchpad

Asked by manolo

I run

System -> Administration -> Hardware Testing

It says:

"This application will gather information from your hardware. Then,
you will be asked manual tests to confirm that the hardware is working
properly. Finally, you will be asked for the e-mail address you use
to sign in to Launchpad in order to submit the information and your
results."

Where are my information and results stored on Launchpad?
Hardware Testing made me realize I have got some video problems: where can I find the possible answer to solve my problem?

Thanks.

Hello

It'll run you through a few tests, asked if it worked, and ask for comments, then it submits the info to the Ubuntu developers using your Launchpad login. I don't think this is something that publicizes the results for easy shopping stuff..

If you have got some video problems open another question ticket like this one here.

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

Well, I'm curious. We happily sent you test info, why can't we gain access to our own test report? I'd be very interested in knowing what you have in your testing database. The app itself doesn't actually provide much info about the sort of data you package and send to the development team.

This thing is beginning to look like a useless automaton.

Still no answer: what about the results of our hardware tests?

Hi, I've got the same problem as you:

hi dear launchpad team,
starting happy with brandnew Hardy, i tried the new tool 'checking hardware/ german: untersuche Hardware' and sent it two times or more to my launchpad accunt. But nothing happened. So, feeling like a newbie or even a DAU: where are my informations now?
best wishes - tricente

Yeah, this is really frustrating. The hardware testing app gives almost no information about what it's doing... There is no "asking if it worked" or "additional testing", it just runs tests mysteriously, asks you for your account email, and then says "finished!". I can't even verify that it did anything but burn processor time.

Er...

Personally, I don't really care if someone sees the below, but is it really wise to publish identifiers in public text files?!?

Didn't Microsoft get crucified for something like this when it was found that they were embedding MAC addresses into Word documents, and didn't Intel have to release a CPU line with the ability to disable hardware identifiers for home users?

<property name="system.hardware.uuid" type="str">
44454C4C-4600-1033-8048-B4C04F503153
</property>

<property name="net.address" type="str">
00:19:b9:6c:cf:7d
</property>

<property name="net.80203.mac_address" type="long">
110485098365
</property>

The box at the end of the tests says what it will send.

I'll quote the text for you as I'm looking at the box now on my screen.

The following information will be send to the launchpad hardware database. Please provide the e-mail address you use to sign into launchpad to submit this information

Distribution details
Device information
Processor Information
Packages Installed
Test Restuls

it says what it will send, if your not comfortable with it don't send it

Actually, I'm quite comfortable sending this sort of information. And so I did.

Nevertheless, when I sent that info I was hoping that I would at least be able to see exactly what I'm sending before it gets to the Ubuntu server.

A few more questions:

1. How do you pull the info? What if it was sent accidently?
2. Given that I've seen a lot of apps send quite important data for analysis - for instance Mozilla used to do this - I'm curious as to why it isn't though a good idea to at least give someone to review the data that is to be sent. Could you give me a reasonable answer as to why you think that this is an unreasonable suggestion?

That last question is phrased /terribly/!

Apologies for anyone who had to parse it.

The question should read:

Given that I've seen a lot of apps send quite important data for analysis - for instance Mozilla used to do this - I'm curious as to why it isn't thought a good idea to at least give someone the opportunity to review the data that is to be sent. Could you give me a reasonable answer as to why you think that this is an unreasonable suggestion?

because it tells you what its sending as I quote above.

It's a plain english summary of what it's sending so that anyone with any level of ability is aware of what's being submitted.

Totally agree with Chris. I don't want a plain english summary in which "Device information" does not imply "private information: we'll publish your mac address to everyone". I mean, a summary of that kind could be good if you don't care about what it's sent. Let me go deeper into more details and decide if I want my computer name or my MAC or my IP or whatever should be published or not.

I do note that Matt Darcy didn't answer the first question: how do you get the info pulled if you don't want it on launchpad anymore?
