hplip 3.9.2 in 8.0.4 LTS

Asked by Alex S

I need hplip 3.9.2 in Hardy 8.0.4 LTS, but it seems to only be available in Fiesty 9.10.

I have a new printer, HP OfficeJet 8500 Pro A909a series, and I would like it to operate under 8.0.4, but synaptic only offers 2.8.2, and shows it already installed. I did try to refresh synaptic, but that did not help. I also do not see this topic on the forums.

HP does have liphp available for download, but I see trouble attempting to install it. If possible, I would like to get a supported package instead of a third party package.

Please advise. Thank you.

Feisty is not 9.10, Karmic is 9.10. Feisty is 7.04.

If you want the latest HPLIP you use tis link:

you will need to mark it as executable with:

chmod +x fileyoudownload

then launch using ./file

obviously you will need to navigate in the terminal to the location of the file you download.

I understand your answer. (My apologies for the confusion between Fiesty and Karmic. I was talking 8.04 vs 9.10, and you got it correctly.)

My question remains. Is there an Ubuntu supported implementation of hplip 3.92 for Hardy 8.04? If not, what kind of problems might I expect attempting to replace the existing hplip 2.82 with 3.92? Thank you.

You can install the HPLIP from the official site, it will work on any distribution of linux.

I just checked the HPLIP site and selected 8.04 and was able to select a printer to be offered the driver script file for download. The newer version will most likely give you more functionality or bug fixes or speed improvements. Newer isnt already always better but in most cases it is.

OK. I knew I could download hplip 3.9.x from HP for Hardy 8.0.4. My concern had been other comments seen in various forums that, if I installed a "non ubuntu version" of a package, I might break current or future operability of my OS.

I sense you are saying this is OK in this case. I will try, and report back in a few days. Thank you.

p.s. Don't worry - I will protect myself with an OS backup - and if I do encounter any issues I will let you know - again, thanks
