karmic keeps saying hp_laserjet_5l not connected

trying to setup hp laserjet 5l to work in karmic.
tried parallel:/dev/lp0 and also par/HP_Laserjet_5L?device=/dev/parport0
using an intel 1.7g p4 640m ram
when i tick print test page it returns printer not connected.
is there something in karmic disabling the parallel port.
even tried an xp hdd and printer works.
Please help.
Thanks in advance in case i dont get back here for a while.

sudo modprobe_pc
then
echo -e 'Hello\r\f > /dev/lp0

add line to /etc/modules

Sorry for the misinfo guys

Just add parpot_pc to /etc/modules
