Also I've downloaded the driver, and get this error message. Could not open the file /home/ruben/Desktop/hplip-3.9.8.run. gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again.

Download the Tarball in step 3.A.

Follow the instructions exactly. Be aware of the code in the fields that have scroll bars. There's a lot of code that you can not see at first glance. I would suggest to copy it to a file, so you know exactly what to enter in the terminal.

I'm having trouble with step 3 the part where it says to Uncompress the tarball. How do I do that?

tar is a uncompressing program that should be installed by default. To confirm, go to your Synaptic Package Manager and search for "tar". If not installed, install it and uncompress the tarball before you install HPLIP-3.9.8

But it looks that "hplip-3.9.8.tar.gz is not located on the Desktop
