How to undo self-inflicted wound with HP M234dw

Asked by Steve Cohen

I recently purchased an HP M234dw. It was simple to install the HPLIP driver software and everything was working fine, printing, scanning, etc.

Then I made a mistake. I was trying to print a document that I learned too late was several hundred pages long. Frantically trying to stop the print and being unable to find the cancel job button, I mistakenly deleted the printer while it was running.

Since then I've been unable to print to the printer using any of the Ubuntu system print dialogs. (Ubuntu 22.04). Every job I try to print ends up being "cancelled" for a reason I can't see. Scanning works using XSane. And printing through Google Chrome succeeds. Evidently it has its own mechanism. So if I want to print a pdf file, I must open it in Chrome and print from there. Printing through Document Viewer fails as it uses the System print dialog. And somehow there are three "printers" installed, all pointing to the same actual printer. None of them work through the system dialog.

I've tried rebooting the machine. I've tried deleting and reinstalling HPLIP. Nothing helps.
How may I fix this or at least get some debugging that would tell me what I need to fix?
