Ok, first of all: Why aren't you using the hplip version that comes with ubuntu? (3.9.2-3ubuntu3)
Then, the error message indicates that not all dependencies for the compile are installed. If you really need to compile hplip yourself you might first run 'sudo apt-get build-dep hplip' - since there is a hplip package in the repositories that should install all needed dependencies. You might also want to remove the installed hplip package with synaptics before you install your version.

Hope that helps.

hi Philip, Thanks for coming back to me.
I have a HP C7283 printer and when I was running version 8.10,

I was using 3.9.2 because this was the driver listed on the HP website for my printer...

If I add a printer it defaults to a 7550 driver, I then assumed I needed 3.9.2 as this is where HP pointed me to originally for my HP C7283 printer driver originally...

Am I correct in assuming that HP has not updated their open source website yet to version 3.9.2-3ubuntu3 ?

Kind regards
Ted

To be correct: 3.9.2 is the program version, the -3ubuntu3 part are some ubuntu-specific patches, so if you just need a driver for your printer use the ubuntu version. (At least for the OfficeJet 7300 I have It works fine). Did you try to add your printer with the GUI? (System->Settings->HPLIP Toolbox - If it's not installed for whatever reason you can get it in synaptics, it's called hplip-gui)
