HPLIP error: SIP version not installed; other printer?

Asked by Georgi Hockaday

Ubuntu 8.04; Dell Dimension 2400 series

Installed HPLIP and got one error and one warning:

ERROR
Checking SIP version...
error: SIP not installed or version not found.

?? What is SIP? Where do I get it? How do I install it?

WARNING:
Lexmark printer not HPLIP installed.

After HPLIP install, I lost my System>Admin>Printer menu button -- also missing menu button in System>Preference. I have one computer but would like to have both the Lexmark AIO and HP installed on the system. I would like to be able to use either printer as the AIO includes scanner, the HP does not. Possible or not?

It would be helpful if you could specify which Lexmark printer and which HP printer you would like to get to work. They need separate drivers. HPLIP is for HP. SIP commonly stands for Session Initiation Protocol and is used in VoIP applications.

How did you install HPLIP?

Thanks Andre.

Lexmark AIO x1270 and HP 697C.

I followed the terminal install directions for HPLIP. The backend CUPS is working. The parallel port is recognized. SIP appears to be the only error in the hp-check log.

I understand that the printer drivers are separate and distinct. If I can't have both installed at the same time, I'll have to make a decision about the HP as I do use the AIO scan function routinely.

In the compatibility listings there are two entries for the Lexmark X1270 - one is under "paperweight" and the other is under "works partially". The recommended driver is the Z600 driver from Lexmark. I am unable to locate it for you on the Lexmark site.

There is a HowTo here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=49714

The HP Deskjet 697C should work by just plugging it in and selecting the printer as your default printer since the driver is in the kernel (most HP devices work well in Ubuntu). There was no need to install hplip.

If I had to make a choice, I would buy an HP multifunction unit and avoid some grey hairs.

Scanning works by installing XSane via Applications, Add/Remove.

Thanks Andre. I have the Z600 driver installed for Lexmark and it does "work partially" as noted. From everything I read, the HP should plug 'n play, just as you say. I bought the Lexmark about 3 months before deciding to try Ubuntu and investing in a new printer right now is not viable.

Final question, should I uninstall HPLIP and just work with the native system?

Good work, Georgi.

Leave the hplip installation. I assume that it was hplip 3.9.2 that you tried to install. The version in the Synaptic Package Manager is 2.8.2.

The program that you may like to install (if you do not have it already) is the hplip toolbox which you will find under Applications, Add/Remove. Add/Remove is a simplified version of the Synaptic Package Manager.
