hplip...12 download

Asked by richard

Gentlemen:
Once I have downloaded HP these driver files, then what?
Where does it go and what file/folder/directory is it associated,
so that it becomes useful, with my HP printers?
Hoe does one make all this "stuff" work, so there is some practical
application of same?
Richard

Did you read the instructions on how to install the hplip-2.8.12 driver after you have downloaded it?

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

As to "where does it go" - it goes to where you have instructed Firefox to download it to. In Firefox, click on "Edit" and then "Preferences". Open the "Main" tab and under "Downloads" it will state where files are saved to. You can alter that if you wish.

Andre,
Reading only adds to the smoke.
I truly don't know how to use Linux with HP printers. I have been wrking on this dilema for 3 months.
Can you recommend anyone who can direct me. I am total lost with this OS. Nothing I try works and
the downloads are all but invisible other than a file name that is hollow.

OK, Richard, I will try to be your guide.

It would help me if you can be specific - expressions such as "nothing I try works" and "the downloads are all but invisible" do not tell me anything except that you are feeling exasperation ... so take a deep breath and ... let us work this out together.

Have you downloaded hplip-2.8.12 ?
Where have you downloaded it to ... is it on your desktop ?

Andre,

I have located the file, but as usual, it while require several more program downloads to read and install. Where does this end? Why is this so impossibly complicated?

Open a terminal window by going to Applications, Accessories, Terminal (make it full screen).

Then type into the terminal window: cd Desktop

Then type: sh hplip-2.8.12.run

Occasionally you will be asked a question, answer and the process will continue. When you are asked if you want to install automatically, press "a".

All the instructions are clearly shown (with pictures) at this URL:

Andre,

I appreciate your help but I am getting so deep into places
I don't care to go, that I resist the enormous effort to learn this material.
I'm sorry, this is way to hard for a simple printer installation and for that matter any peripheral hardware device. Why would someone conceive
and fabricate such a convoluted path of computing.

Richard,

30 million Linux users would disagree with you.

There is a simpler way:

Forget the downloaded package.

To install the hplip package via Synaptic

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

sudo apt-get install hplip

sudo hp-setup

give your user password when requested and then press enter.

Andre,

The internet does not wok for me. I cannot work in that environment. To suggest continuing only complicates very simple operations. If someone could show me the "formula", all of this unproductive rhetoric could be permanently eliminated. My interaction with the Linux comminity, as well as between others of the Linux community, would no longer be of any proposed benefit and would cease to exist. Facts are of no use to me, only conceptual understanding and the ultimate pathways of concise logical and cohesive reasoning are of any meaning. Linux was conceived by the children of the "game boy era" and has not evolved beyond "play station 1", what ever that insignificant designation might be. History will erase the remedial exitence of such so call intellect. Give me the "key", or something of use. My problem I solved otherwise...Linux is Dead.

richard you have ask to install a driver download from the net... we are all thinking you was connected to the net...

So if you want to really try Ubuntu please open a new question asking howto connect Ubuntu to the net...
and please provide some useful info about your network hardware (simply tell us if you are using a router, a modem and what is the type of connection: via ethernet cable or via wireless (if you can please connect your pc via ethernet cable to get easy initial setup)

Thank you
