my printer cups does not work and only the default PDF is on display

since i re-installed my ubuntu 8.04, i have had problem working with any printer at all. only the default PDF (print to) displays and i cant even add any other one, when i try to it just tries to start the printing application then stops without a feedback. please help.b.
