printing gibberish over wireless lan to HP K5400 - works OK MS XP also on laptop

Asked by Joe Ryan

Have Ubuntu 8.4 loaded on an ACER 5100 laptop as well as the existing MS XP Pro. The XP and the Ubuntu work ok thru a wireless LAN to access the internet, etc. but only the XP can access another PC on the LAN to share doc's, etc, and print to an HP K5400 Officejet printer. The Ubuntu accesses the printer, but prints lines of 'gibberish'.
I believe it's cause there's no up-to-date driver in Ubuntu for this printer...I should be able to access the printer using the access point in XP, which it apparently is doing, but----gibberish
I believe I need to install a driver called, HPLIP 2.8.1.0, but who knows!
Help!
Joe

Whoops...newbie made some mistakes...
1. It's Ubuntu 8.10
2. It's HPLIP 2.8.10
What I'm trying to do is access the printer from Ubuntu the same as I can from Windows, XP (also on this laptop).
If there is some way for Ubuntu to access the LAN access in the XP partition I'm sure it would work, but.....
Any help?
