ubuntu 11.04 not properly controlling printer: HP photosmart C5180 All In One

Asked by harlie dills

I recently upgraded from ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04. Initially the printer worked like a charm but recently (I did an update) the printer a HP photosmart C5180 All In One no longer will feed from the upper tray, and, sometimes it seems that I can't get the photo to fill the photo paper. In this I am in all cases referring to printing photos. Any printing on 81/2" x 11" is never a problem.
I checked the repository and it says the latest hplip is installed. To follow that I removed then reinstalled hplip ....no help.
So what else do I need to look for?
By the way the printer control and setup window in settings has no option to change the settings for the printer and it only refers to the printer as a C5100 series where I am pretty sure it initially recognized and labeled it as a C8180. I am sure the answer is simple but I don't know what it is. Please advise.

There is a 3.11.7 hplip on the hplip site which may help.

cd ~; wget -o hplip.run http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/hplip/hplip/3.11.7/hplip-3.11.7.run?r=http%3A%2F%2Fhplipopensource.com%2Fhplip-web%2Finstall%2Finstall%2Findex.html&ts=1316032154&use_mirror=netcologne

Should download it, if the download finishes then stops, press ENTER. You can then install it with:

chmod +x ~/hplip.run; ~/hplip.run

It will then install for you

Go to the hpilip site and download the file to ~/Downloads

Then you can run:

cd ~/Downloads; chmod +x *.run; nautilus ~/Downloads

double click the file and select to run it in a terminal

this is the result I get.

bash: chmod+x~/Downloads/hplip-3.11.7.run: no such file or directory

bash: ~.Downloads/hplip-3.11.7.run: no such file or directory

I attempted to copy and paste the terminal window with the full string of commands and results but didn't succeed

Look at the command I gave, look at what you ran. I'll make it clearer for you:

chmod+x~/Downloads/hplip-3.11.7.run
chmod +x ~/Downloads/hplip-3.11.7.run

Note teh spaces you have removed (for some unknown reason). If you COPY the command instead of trying to type it, it WILL work. That's why I give the EXACT command

I look at what you gave and what I entered and I can see no difference in them also I don't know how to copy your command and if copied to what? I don't any spaces in your typing I don't know why. I am trying to do this in a terminal window is this the wrong place?

I finally got it installed using the sh command. the problem was the path to the file. I had to; cd to home then cd to harlie then cd to Downloads then sh hplip etc
thanks for your help and patience I guess I tried your patience but I am a new user and don't know much about what I am doing.

harlie.
