Your OfficeJet 4500 should work in Ubuntu 10.10 without downloading any additional drivers or adding your printer to a list.

"I go under new printer add and their no option to add USB printer" - where do you find this menu entry?

Plug it into a USB port, attach the power cable, switch it on and start your computer.

If it has an IP address you can add it. Under System -> Administration -> Printing, select Add. Then select Network printer, and then Find a Printer. Type in the IP address. It may also autodiscover it if you wait on Find a Printer long enough.
