I am a brand new linux user- how do I find out what ubuntu version I have installed on my computer along with bit #?

Asked by Liane Soukup

I am a brand new linux user- how do I find out what ubuntu version I have installed on my computer along with bit #?

I would like to know this information to know- but also because I am trying to see how I can use the scan capabilities for my HP Printer- currently when I try to scan it does nothing- so I went to the HP site and stated linux and the system now wants to know what version of Ubuntu and bit #.

Thank you in advance for assistance.

Also- any words of advice for a newbie to linux? tips, best practices?

There are two commands you can use to find the version, please run the following commands in a terminal:
cat /etc/issue

or you can use:
cat /etc/lsb-release

To find the if the kernal is 32 or 64 bit type :
file /sbin/init

New to Ubuntu: read the Ubuntu Manual, it's very informative: http://ubuntu-manual.org/
