HP printer didnt work out of the box on Lucid

Asked by G.D.Walker

I have recently moved from 8.04 Hardy to 10.04 Lucid by a clean install. My old HP Officejet V45 would no longer work "out of the box". I have got it going now so feel free to moderate this away if no longer applicable. But just in case it wasnt my stupidity a printer guru may be able to prevent others getting the same problem. So:

When nothing came out of the printer I added HPLIP Toolbox to help me. After a couple of attempts to configure it and print a letter out, I still had no output.

Eventually I noticed (I am old and slow these days) that I had two printers:
1) Officejet-V45 with a location of gerry-desktop
2) Officejet_V45 with no location
(nota bene: hyphen and underscore).

I tried both but still got nothing. I then got distracted and half an hour later one of my documents suddenly appeared!

It turns out that the first printer did not work but the second one did. As luck would have it the "faulty" printer was set as the default printer.

OK, so I used System/Administration/Printing to change the default printer and get rid of the "faulty" one (and the second fax) and now I am happy.

So I guess my question is: Did I mess up or did the 10.04 install mess up?
If it was me, how do we stop others doing the same thing?
If it was 10.04, was it the naming that was critical or was it something to do with 'location'?

The location is defined by the user when it is first installed so is only for humans to read really.

You could upgrade the HPLIP to the one on the HPLIP site to see if it helps.

Many thanks, but as I say it is working now. I was just puzzled as to why Officejet-V45 (hyphen) (presumed set up by 10.04 install) did not work but Officejet_V45 (underscore) (presumed set up by HPLIP Toolbox) did and whether this implied a deficiency in 10.04 or in my brain.

After the big update at the weekend my printer has failed again. Nothing now prints.

I cant even set it up with HPLIP Toolbox. I get Device Communication Error 5012.

I used the HPLIP Wizard at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html to download, compile and install 3.10.5 and set up the printer again. All OK again now.

I then used System/Admin/Printing to make the second printer the default and get rid of the first (non-working) one. The Wizard also deleted HPLIP Toolbox so I didnt bother to re-install it.
