USB HP printer not recognized in setup

Asked by Gerard

After a year or more of reliable service my HP 1018 laserjet does not connect to, or gets recognized by the HP-setup program.

From terminal:

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.10.5)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 9.0

Same result with a different printer cable.

Other possible conflict:

Lirc daemon is running: I have a TV card installed and running that has built in remote control--I have been fiddling with lirc trying to connect to card w/o success.

Thanks for your interest.

I've 8.04 and I could install your printer.

Click System > Administration > Printing.
Click New printer and follow the instructions.

I suggest you grab the latest HPLIP from the HPLIP site, mark the script as executable then run it in a terminal as you (do NOT use sudo).

Thanks for your replies.

There were mentions of system-config-printer problems that affected HP printers in forums. Reinstalling system-config-printer has no effect

I did download the latest HPLIP from the site as you suggest. In the terminal I moved into the folder and wrote:

chmod777 / foo.run
sudo sh /foo.run

but ir would not run. I then left clicked on the file icon, and it installed from the file manager. I can post the log file it this would help.

Thanks again,

ger

you need to replace foo with the script name, also the syntax of the command means the terminal must be in the same folder as the file. So if you downloaded to the desktop you would first need to run:

cd ~/Desktop

then run the script.

Can you help with this problem?
