HP 6500 prints but no scanner function

HP 6500 prints fine, no problem.

Unable to scan any documents/pictures etc. No scan function.

Sounds like you need to download the latest HPLIP. This may also help
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html

Mark the script as executable and launch it in a terminal as your user (not sudo)

Downloading hplip, new version and may fix problem.

Could not open the file /home/bob/Desktop/hplip-3.10.5.run using the
Unicode (UTF-8) character coding.????????????????

Followed download that would not auto start, had to manual and loaded to
desk top. Got the above error. Thinks it is a binary file????

cd /home/bob/Desktop; chmod +x ./hplip-3.10.5.run; ./hplip-3.10.5.run

should do it.

Install the missing packages then, read the output, it tells you what it needs.
