How to enable OSD of sound up/down/mute and brightness in Kubuntu?

I have updated my Thinkpad R50e and the Thinkpad Sl500 of a friend to Kubuntu Karmic. The SL500 shows OSD feedback in nice and shiny KDE4 appearance when I press I adjust sound, mute it or change the brightness. The R50e does not. The keys work there, but I could not figure which package I am missing or which setting is different.

I have found the "solution" myself, it appears to be an (unresolved) bug.

Can you help with this problem?
