editing node: cursor stays at end of line

Asked by Roel Challa

Binary package hint: hnb

* product: hnb 1.9.18

* environment: ubuntu 6.06, terminal (started from menu) or virtual console (started by alt-f1, alt-f2...); in ubuntu 5.10 no malfunction found; I compared .hnbrc in ubuntu 5.10 and ubuntu 6.06: equal

* description of malfunction: when editing a node (by pressing enter) and then commanding the cursor to go to the left (by pressing left arrow) cursor seems to remain at the end of line. This is only optical: an invisible cursor obeys the (left and right) arrow keys and makes it possible to insert or delete characters at a position of the user's choice.

* expected behaviour: when in edit mode cursor should visibly follow the arrow keys

* reproduce malfunction:
**1: start terminal (from menu) or start virtual console (by pressing alt-f1, alt-f2...)
**2: start hnb with "hnb <some_file_name>"
**3: make a node by entering some text, terminated by 'enter'
**4: edit this node by pushing enter key
**5: try moving cursor to left by pushing left key
**6: insert some characters by pushing some keys

* this malfunction also found on a different machine (different hardware)

* this malfunction is also to some degree described on date/time = 2006-01-09 10:02, on url = "http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9425880&forum_id=1839"

Can confirm this bug, which was also reported as: Bug #51651

Furthermore, building from the sourceforge version of hnb 1.9.17 shows that 1.9.17 does not have this problem.

I'll be submitting a diff tonight, and hopefully a patch.

The attached patch against the hnb_1.9.18-3 source from the repos fixes the problem.

I'm confirming this:

I think I'm allowed to, seeing as the patch works. Any chance of getting this worked into Dapper?

I'm closing this particular bug as Fix Release because it is uploaded. However the package now FTBFS on ia64 and amd64 for other reasons. Thanks for your contribution!

When creating a Doc or Email and I make an err writing, I try to use the arrow keys (left & right)to move the cursor back to my mistake but the cursor will not move. I can move the up & down arrow keys, but not the left & right arrow keys, plus the delete key will not delete the errors I make to the right of the cursor, but the backspace key will delete mistakes to the left.

Is this a problem with my keyboard functions or a is it an error in the message line signal that is not being picked by my key stroke?

I have tried running Up-Dates but Windows says everything is up to date. I tried to look up the problem but this site (so far) is the only site to allow someone to Post Bug problems.

bweusi,

This is an Ubuntu help forum, so I assume you are running Ubuntu or one of its variants. You say "Windows says everything is up to date." Are you using Windows? If so, I'm not sure the information here will be useful in solving your problem.
