Ubuntu 11.10 will not hibernate.

Asked by wordsmyth2

Having recently re-installed Ubuntu 11.10 I now find it will not hibernate. When I click on the hibernate mode in the menu, my log-in window re-appears briefly and then the computer shuts down. I have to then re-boot. Suspend works okay, but not hibernate. Any solution for this?

Thanks for your response, Parsnip. It's the same Dell Inspiron laptop I've used for the past two years. Hibernation worked fine with Ubuntu 11.10 with the previous installation. I re-installed same to solve some other bothersome problems with 11.10, which have been fixed (for some reason I've had more problems with 11.10 than ANY previous release), but as usual : when you fix one set of problems, you find new ones. For example, on the previous installation, files kept creeping from one workspace to the next, the work panel on the left wouldn't always reappear when needed etc. etc. and so forth. Now everything seems to be working okay, except hibernation mode. These ongoing probs are frustrating. I'm not a newbie - been working with computers for the past 20 years - and while I like Ubuntu I'm tempted to try or re-try another OS that is less problem prone. But meanwhile, any clues on how the solve the hibernation problem? Have downloaded all updates etc.

I've also noted on Launchpad Answers that this was a problem with earlier Ubuntu releases and subsequently fixed. ...

I suggest you report a bug then, state that Mint makes things ok. You could try Precise. See if its ok there

Can you help with this problem?
