Will not recover from suspend or hibernate

Asked by Joel Stein

I have just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.10. Have always used suspend function for weeks on end. With 11.10 if I use suspend, when it comes back up the screen is filled with disjointed pixels and is totally indecipherable. I'm hoping there's an easy fix for this as it's much quicker to suspend that shut down.

If this is true report a bug, it's in developement status.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+bugs

If Natty 11.04 was meant it's maybe a graphic card issue.
Suspend issues are tricky.

With no further info do a websearch with keywords ubuntu <graphic card> suspend.
Or have a look at Bug reports around 700000.

Examples.

You are probably right about the graphics card. When I first downloaded natty I was unable to utilize unity so I downloaded nvidia173 that did the trick but that is when the recovery problem began. I hate to say that my skill level is so low that most of what is on those canonical sites is greek to me. Oh by the way, you're absolutely right it is 11.04. I just had a senior moment there. If necessary I can just let my computer run all day. Thanks for your help.

If it worked well with Maverick and not anymore with Natty consider to report a bug.

I've located a possible glitch in the Nvidia driver. It has Nvidia173 and a Nvidia accelorated driver. At the bottom it has Nvidia172 installed but not activated and a square to click to activate. It also has Nvidia accelorated driver not installed. I'm at the point on the learning curve where I'm hesitant to click anything I don't fully understand. What do you think? I've been trying for two days to figure out how to file a bug report.

Is nvidia-current and nvidia-settings installed?
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/nvidia-current

Usefulness of -173 depends which graphic card you have.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/nvidia-173

Drivers can be activated in 'additional drivers' in system settings.

Please open a terminal and post outputs: ctrl+alt+t
sudo lshw -C video

dpkg -l nvidia* |grep ii

Lets say for example nvidia-173 causes trouble:
ubuntu-bug nvidia-173

## Basically it's: ubuntu-bug <package_name>

John, I downloaded NVIDIA 173 from their download site and activated it on the download site. I now have a screensaver when it returns from suspense but theutilities at the side and the toolbar are blurred and unreadable. Fortuately I know what the tools are but it is irritating. I did report a bug and have received no answer. Good luck.

Can you help with this problem?
