How to get hdate-applet working on Ubuntu trusty

Asked by MikeR

Running Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty) with GNOME fallback
Downloaded and installed hd-applet_0.15.11-2_i386.deb
Did:
$ sudo find / -name hdate-applet -print
[sudo] password for mike:
/usr/share/pixmaps/hdate-applet
/usr/share/doc/hdate-applet
/usr/lib/hdate-applet
$ ls -l /usr/lib/hdate-applet
total 0
i.e. no files in /usr/lib/hdate-applet

What must I do to obtain and activate the applet?
(hdate and hcal work OK, so I assume the relevant libraries are installed)

Thanks,
MikeR

If you right click the time, can you change the applet ran?
Or, try right clicking the top panel and add the applet there.....

right-clicking the time gives
Copy date and time
Adjust date and time (changes time zone)
Preferences
Preferences allows changing 12H / 24H clock

Right-clicking the top panel ( & Alt, or nothing happens)
shows "Add to panel" from a list which does *not* include hdate-applet or hdate-anything

In the Applications menu I find Hdate, but not hdate-applet -- not the same thing!

According to http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/amd64/hdate-applet/filelist the executable seems to be /usr/bin/ghcal or /usr/bin/ghcal-he

What happens if you try starting ghcal ?

ghcal starts, shows a full month with Hebrew/English dates.
I'm looking for the applet that used to run in the top panel and showed the current Hebrew date

Comparing the file lists for the lucid version with the trusty version, there seems to be the /usr/lib/hdate-applet/hdate-applet file missing. I suggest you create a bug report that the developers have a look at this.
