Asked by Theo Speak

Hello everyone.
I am a 26 year old South African male living in Johannesburg. All of my life,I have been a windoze user. That was true up till now.I have recently(4 days ago)recieved this marvellous software from some very kind people. It is called Ubuntu 5.10 .Thank you to everyone involved in the realisation of this dream.

I am a complete Linux noob,so I would like for you to bear with me as I relate my experience thus far.

1.As soon as I recieved my package,I tore it open with glee and inserted it into my DVD Writer(Benq).Eveything goes swimmingly.
Uh-oh...something wrong."unable to read file...corrupted file...integrity check...I am lost.

Ah-ha.Solve problem.Load from CD Rom(Samsung).Loading...Please enter...Hello!

I am now inside this new world. This GNU/Linux world. It looks beautiful!

2.I read.Help file(lifesaver)
I have questions.
How do I load software?
My sound is not working?
Need Internet?

I am lost...again.

I think...think...think...nothing.

I excersise last resort.Go visit that windoze thing. It's good for something.

I am in windoze.Fire up my cellphone.Fire up my bluetooth.Get online.google,google,google.

I read.Synaptic...bluez-utils...rfcomm...hci...

I try for next few days.No luck.accept ...yes...nothing.I try for 4 days.Nothing.

Back to windoze,google.

I read...data cable...wvdial.

I go back to the breeze.

Do wvdial. It works!I am online!I am going wild!

First thing. Synaptic.I spent too much airtime downloading packages, only to meet with dissappointment when it refuses to install from CD.I downloaded all the packages from www.packages.ubuntu.org

"could not open" "archive type not supported"

I have not come over this challenge.

I fire up Synaptic.I unlock multiverse.I see gnome-bluetooth.I download.I am lost again.

Questions.
1+2.How do I install packages from CD?Is it possible?

3.How do I work gnome-bluetooth?

4etc.How do I fix my sound?Volume icon in corner has a cross next to it.Look in device manager.I see the following:

CS4610/11 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator

Device tab:

Vendor:Cirrus Logic
Device:CS4610/11 [CrystalClear Soundfusion]

Hello,

You have written over here quite a long post, but it was interesting and good to hear that you entered to the world of free software.

Ubuntu because it is free has a few contras, like does not supports non free formats like mp3, avi, mov, real media, mpeg and so on. How to install these you will find over here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats

Another thing is that now Breezy Badger is getting to old, so update your system right now in order to have better driver support, better ubuntu feeling, and a better system. Tomorrow Canonical ships out the brand new, revolutionary version of Ubuntu 6.06 aka Dapper Drake. So upgrade your system, surely a notification icon will appear, if not then search in the updates section and install those updates. It gonna take a long time but it is far more better and faster than Breezy Badger believe me.

Connected to your driver problems Dapper hopefully will solve everything. So just install it.

You have to enable all you non free universe, multiuniverse so called repositories in order to get a lot of good community based updates, and support. You will get detailed information connected to this at the link above.

Here you get a a sneak peak about what can give the new Ubuntu 6.06 to you http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=651&slide=3&title=ubuntu+6.06+rc+screenshots

Finally we are happy to hear that out there Ubuntu is becomming more and more important. And you can be proud to your country because Ubuntu is a South African Distribution :).

Sincerely,

Thank you for your kind and welcoming words,Batjalan. The sites you pointed me to contain really useful information. My sincere gratitude to you.

Since posting ,I have managed to get File transfer(Send and recieve) as well as the remote control function for my phone sorted out.For the file transfer ,I downloaded gnome-bluetooth.I am not sure if I may ,but I would like to create a post to show others how I did it.Please someone please let me know if it is OK to do so.

Linux is the best thing to ever happen to me.It is very interesting and beautifully executed.I am hopelessly enamoured.

I am working on getting online via bluetooth.I know I shall recieve the solution soon.

I think I shall go and create that post now...

For GPRS:

Check this page http://www.ubuntu-in.org/wiki/GPRS_Howto
You will need to have service provider specific information handy.
(This page was written with help from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BluetoothDialup)

For remote control functionality:
Since you have already sorted out, I would like you try some profiles made for GNU/Linux apps.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BluetoothRemoteControl

NOTE: Both pages are created by me. So if you have any comments/suggestions, mail me.

Hi,

Where can I download the bluetooth support files and PPP ? I don't have internet at home and rely on the GPRS to get online, so I must have everything ready before install, once the Bluetooth DUN works I can install the rest.

You don't need any thing extra for using GPRS over bluetooth. PPP should be there by default. Just read above mentioned pages and you will have all the info you need.

BY the way, if you are still using breezy (Ubuntu 5.10) then it is time to upgrade. 5.10 will soon be unsupported release. Upgrade to Dapper (6.06) first. If you want long term support, use 6.06 or you can stay ahead with latest technology by upgrading to Edgy (6.10) and subsequent new releases every six months.

Yes there is. Download gnome-ppp package (universe repository) from the http://packages.ubuntu.com website.
The phone number depends on your cell phone manufacturer. The http://easyconnect.linuxuser.hu/ GPRS Easy Connect package ships the apn.txt and chat-scripts.txt files containing necessary data to set up your cell phone with gnome-ppp. ( *99# phone number should be fine for your Nokia 6680) Should be located somewhere in a folder called "tools" or similar. To find the right mount point of your mobile only enable the "last accessed" coloumn of your file manager. Click at the last "accessed coloumn" header. There should be a small black triangle. The triangles peak should point to the top to list the last accessed files at the top. Plug in your mobile. (Preverable USB) You should see the new mount point of your cell phone. This mount mount i.e. /dev/ttyACM0 should be insert into the regarding field of gnome-ppp. Furthermore it's quite important to enable the "stupid mode". That's it.
regards,

Can you help with this problem?
