Asked by christophe

Hi,

First time I'm using the application gaim to discuss with friends who have MSN. I have two questions :

1) how can I do to have access to picture of my friend because she is using a webcam but I don't see her face on my PC?

2) how can I do to install easily a webcam on my PC with ubuntu and the application gaim?

Thanks for your reply
Christophe

Hello,

Your problem is just a bit complicated under Linux :( because webcam support is now under developement although I have solution for you :).

Go to this Ubuntu Wiki Guide to install your cam https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Webcam

In order to use webcam with MSN, Yahoo users you need to install a new messenger client because webcam support in Gaim is under developement but don't worry with Gaim 2.0 you will have webcam support so just use this messenger which is really cool aMSN which you can find here http://amsn.sourceforge.net/index.php

You can get live support about installing these tools if you have experiencing any problem on irc.freenode.net on #ubuntu channel.

Oh now I am seeing that you can get aMSN messenger in Synaptic package manager, so just go to System - Administration and open Synaptic, search for amsn and then install it.

Hope I could help you somehow,

Sincerely,

Bajtalan Hunor from ROMANIA

Also try Kopete.
Gaim 2.0 beta 3 does not have any kind of voice/video support, Mr Hunor - so unless the developers are going to implement it perfectly between now and release in a month or so, it's safe to presume that Gaim 2.0 won't have V/V.
aMSN doesn't do anything other than MSN, by the way. If you want cool things like multi-protocol support etc I recommend you try kopete - sudo apt-get install kopete. If you're using GNOME it may appear a bit oddly as it's a Qt-based application, but aMSN is skin-based so it might appear even more oddly.

My computer is not saying there is a webcam at all, but there is one. I have a 904HA running Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix. (It's all about "904.")

Thanks for any help.

Can you help with this problem?
