How disconnect USB external harddisk

Asked by Guy Dierickx

I have an extern Harddisk (Western Digital) connected to my pc via USB 2.0. When I disconnect the harddisk while running Ubuntu or in Windows XP, Ubuntu will not start next time.
What shall I do to avoid this. I think I must inform Ubuntu that I would remove the harddisk. But how and where?

I am very curios to the answer.

Usually with winxp if you remove the usb device, windows will inform you with a pop-up balloon. Upon restart of the pc, if your still having troubles try uninstall/reinstall the software.

When you say "ubuntu will not start" what actually happens?

Ubuntu start up, but it "hangs" and I cannot enter my uysername or so. I think that Ubuntu checks all the installed devices, and seeks after the disconnected harddisk.

Where does it hang? At the logon screen or before that appears?

Is it totally unresponsive, does the caps-lock light come on and off when you press it, when it's in the "hung" state?
Can you use CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a console?

I did a new test. When de pc was off, I disconnected the extended harddisk. Then I started the pc and choose Ubuntu.
Everything was ok. I could put in my username and password and Ubuntu runned fine.
The problem I had in the past was clearly not the result of disconnecting the harddisk.
What it was, I don't know.
Sorry!
Thanks for the help.
