Some media formats are what we call Restricted. There are patent and copyright restrictions which complicate the ability of a free operating system to distribute software that will support proprietary or non-free formats. This includes wmv, aac, wma, avi, divx, mp3, Quicktime, RealMedia, and encrypted DVDs among others.

It is very easy to enable the playing of these non-free formats following the directions on the Restricted Formats page.
