sound card mute !

my sound card does not work with UBUNTU which was installed a few days ago on this PIII 450 MHz in order to get aquainted with Linux. I tried to use the device manager to no avail, although I was able to configure the printer and it works now but in my opinion it must have been a miracle or just by pure luck. The book from Eyrolles has not been of much help so far, although consulted several times, it seems the PC does not operate as per the book on many instances...

What motherboard and sound card do you have? If you are not sure about these please open the terminal and issue 'lspci -v' command there, copy its output and post it here.

I am an user of ubuntu 5.10. When ever I play a media file the player is running i mean the bar is moving but i am unable to listen to any sound . The following is my system configuration
 Intel p4 processor, D915gavl Motherboard, 3 HT processor

when I typed lspci -v the following came up

So is my sound card installed? If so whats the problem and how do i solve it?
