I'm guessing that this is a softmodem. This means that part of the modem's operation occurs in software (rather than hardware), so it requires a sophisticated and specific driver to make it work. As there are very many varieties of softmodem, and very few of these have open specifications, there are unfortunately few drivers available for Linux.

Try this, you may be lucky and have a supported modem:

http://linmodems.org/

If it's not supported, the only practical way to get a working modem is to buy a supported softmodem or a hardware modem.

Hope this helps.

I don't remember the model number, but my modem is also an Intel, and worked with the HSF driver from Linuxant (linuxant.com). The driver has 14.4k non-fax functionality free, and full for $20US. Maybe yours is similar. Linmodems has a scanModem utility that can help you figure out the chipset of the modem, and therefore what driver might work.

Good help on setting up modems in Ubuntu is available in the Wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DialupModemHowto
