Visual Effects Normal fails

In the Appearance Preferences window, tab: Visual Effects, the setting Normal fails.
No help function available.
Drivers for graphic card seems to be installed ATI Radeon X1950 Pro (how to check for new drivers)
All Compiz programs seem to be installed, but I cannot find the CompizConfig Settings Manager in the Preferences menu.

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.
