What make and model of laptop is it?

Do you have any media inserted into the slot?

On most supported devices you won't see anything until you insert a device into the slot when you'll get a shortcut on the desktop.

I suggest you to upgrade your kernel to 2.6.18 or later: support for these devices has been extended in the newest releases.

My laptop is an Acer TravelMate 3212NWXMi upgraded to 512DDR2. I have trid both an MMC and SD card in the slot, but nothing at all. Having just loaded Ubuntu, I have also updated all updates to today. The slot remains dead!

I've not been able to get the built in SD/MMC card reader to work on my Gateway laptop. My workaround had been to use a cheap USB connected Kodak 6 in 1 reader that works flawlessly.

I think I paid $10 for it. It isn't pretty, but it works until kernel support catches up with my hardware.

Thanks Jim. I'll go out and buy one. To easy. Other than that so far
Ubuntu is the easiest thing I've ever done on a computer and being a
retired old bloke it needs to be simple!

Many thanks for the info. However I am using 6.06 LTS Dapper and when I
tried your suggestion I received message
FATAL: Module tifm_7xx1 not found. etc. So no joy I'm afraid.

I have a Sony laptop and have a SD/MMC reader that is built-in. When I insert the card, nothing happens. I cannot find the drivers to install.
