Screen Resolutions Missing

Asked by Fozzimus

I cannot change the screen resolution settings of my system! It seems to be locked at 640x480 at 60Hz... no other resolution (or refresh rate) apears for me to select. What am I doing wrong?

most likely ubuntu couldn't retrive your monitors refresh rates so you got stuck with a default. i'm not sure if there are any config tools for xorg.conf (the files this data is stored in) as i always edit it by hand but basicly you should try finding out your monitors vertical refresh rates and horizontal refresh rates and open up /etc/X11/xorg.conf. in the monitor section ou should see some refresh rates set for you. change them to match your monitors refresh rates and then scroll to the card card section. this should show you all the resolutions that are set up for xorg. simply add any that are missing to the appropriate colour selection. most likely you only need to edit the 24 bit section.

There are indeed a way to configure this apart from editing the conf file by hand : (in a terminal)

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

You probably don't need to modify anything apart from adding the right resolution(s) when the tool asks you this question.

Please let us know if this works.
