slow online performance

Asked by Mark Gaylord

I have two hard drives, one with Windows, one with Ubuntu. They were recently partitioned. I have been having several problems ever since, but I will make separate requests.

When I am working online in Ubuntu, it generally takes pages longer to load than should be the case. I am using DSL, so that's not the problem. The problem is sporatic; sometimes pages can load fast, sometimes they can take the best part of a minute. I wasn't about to blame Ubuntu, but I was wondering if everything was installed properly.

Thanks for any help!

This page might help you to setup your DSL modem correctly: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE

Ah, one more thing. We are on a wireless network here. Will this affect the performance of Windows for those who are using Windows here?

I don't think so. Are you connected to a router? If so, I doubt the information listed in the Wiki will be useful.

Yes, we are connected to a router. Since I didn't help set it up at all, I had to ask about the stages. First is the DSL modem, then the router, then the wireless. Our phone is also connected to the router since we are using Vonage.

This is the message I get when I bring up a terminal and go through the first step of the process as given on the help Web site:

"Sorry, I scanned 2 interfaces, but the Access Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please check your network and modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe process which controls the modem."

That is because the help I pointed you out, is for peoples who connect directly to their ADSL modem. DHCP (what you use to connect to your router) works perfectly on Ubuntu.

The problem could be on the network side.

Thanks. We will continue to work on our network and hopefully get this straightened out.

Just one other thing for now. Since installing Ubuntu, there is a tendency for our audio players to play things at a slow speed. This is true of radio and stuff ripped from a CD. I first thought it was a Ubuntu problem, but the same thing happened when I switched back to Windows (since we have both on the same computer). Do you think something happened during installation? I can't trace it, since it doesn't happen all the time.

You should open a new ticket, or even a bug report, for the cdrom problem.

Feel free to close the ticket, if you don't have any other question related to your network problem.
