 I can't get my hp scanjet 3970 scanner or my hj deskjet 920c series printer working! Any help would greatly be appreciated.

For the scanner have you installed sane...?
open a terminal from Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install sane libsane xsane-common
the system ask you a password, give your user password then press enter (you will not see any video chars when you type the password).

For your hp printer have you tried cups or hplip...?
1) - First try with cups
cups may be already into your Ubuntu and must be already started, try to add and test your printer

If it don't work then install hplip, open a terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install hplip
then open a terminal and run
sudo hp-setup
