don't get sound

Asked by hajo

I have a laptop by cybermaxx.
Ubuntu works fine on it but... the soundcard m1533 PCI to ISA Bridge [Aladin IV] doesn't give any sound!
An USB handset does play the system sounds but not music.
Can you HEEELP?
Thanks!!
Greetings

ps I'm a TOTAL non knowing windows user who very much liked the ubuntu live dowload and subsequently installed the Ubuntu software.

pps if it doesn't work how do I uninstalle the Ubuntu or change the loader system so that it starts windows XP first by default?

pps I tried to open a large +- 300 page word.doc file and open office org 2 couldn't handle it. pity!

As far as the Aladin IV I'm not 100% certain, but if I was having the problem here is what I would do:
* I would mess around with the settings for System->Preferences->Sound and System->Preferences->Multimedia Settings.
* Additionally I would attempt to "cat /etc/passwd > /dev/dsp" (that that less the quotes in a terminal)that might give some information reguarding the problem. It might say something like permission denied or device unavailable.
* I would Check the web page for ALSA (http://www.alsa-project.org/)
* Read my log files (in /var/log and the output of the command "dmesg")
* If all else fails I would try Google (or maybe I would try that first :)

The USB Handset can play sounds because it has access to the codec. By music you probably mean MP3. MP3 is a priopriatary format and because of this you cannot Ubuntu cannot include it by default, but you can get easy access to mp3s by reading the following: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats?action=show&redirect=mpeg

As for the 'pps': grub is Ubuntu's boot loader. Assuming that windows is configured in it changing the default option should be easy. As root you will need to edit the file named /boot/grub/menu.lst
It should be obvious after that.

And the second 'pps': If what you say about the word doc is true you should file a bug.
