Speakers do not work.

Asked by Satinder

My speakers do not work. The error message that occurs when I try to access volume control shows similarly as "GStreamer plugin not found and/or sound card device not detected.
When I type in a command in Terminal to find out if Ubuntu is detcting the sound card but the driver is not installed properly, it shows that I have a sound card from VIA.

I forgot the terminal command because I just copied and pasted the code from some page of the ubuntu forums. If you could post it then I can display the results. Thank you very much for your response.

is this sound card apart of a modem combo(older HP PC or Compaq PC)
type 'cat /proc/asound/cards' and post back results.

**I believe that this Rockwell chip is on a modem/sound card combo and there is not any drivers that I am aware of.

Yes, the computer that I installed Ubuntu on was a windows 98 computer about 7 years ago. The speakers, and monitor came with it in a bundle.

I had a old compaq that had this rockwell modem/sound combo. Spent hours upon hours trying to get it to work, finally slapped a old Sound Blaster in there and problem was solved. I looked for drivers for this card and no luck. Windows even had aproblem with this chipset. It would seem(i cringe to tell you this)it would probably be easier to add a soundcard. If you do not have any laying around, you could purchase one from new egg or EBay.
Sorry I do not have a fix or your soundcard.

Thanks for the immediate response.

look at this link
http://www.linux.com/howtos/Hardware-HOWTO/sound.shtml
this has a descent list. Any old SB16 should work fine, or SB live(should be cheap on ebay)as for new egg go to sound cards look at the descriptions of the ones in your price range and see if they support Linux.

try this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829130001
this uses the CMI8738 chipset which alsa supports. Make sure you are using dapper. If you did buy this one, goto alsa site and follow instructions.

This might look like a dumb question, but this particular card will fit in the same slot as the previous one. Right?
