Ubuntu says no sound card installed

Asked by Speedoo

I just installed Ubuntu linux on my older 300MHz Dell PC. The machine has a Soundblaster AWE64 soundcard, but linux hasn't recognized it. How can I enable the sound capabilities of my computer? The card was working fine under WinXP, but "disappeared" when I switched to Linux. Thanks!

Does your PC also have 'on-board' sound?
I noticed that my Kubuntu install favored the on-board over the installed SoundBlaster card.
There should be a way to switch between soundcards, but I use KDE, so don't know where it would be in GNOME...

Sound in linux is managed by the ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) sub-system .http://www.alsa-project.org/
Check wheter your sound card is supported and has a driver
You can do a search in google.com/linux for your soundcard

The command "lspci" will give you some information about what is attached to the pcibus. I would agree with FrodeEgelan. If you have onboard that might be favored. Do you have anything listened in gnome-sound-properties?
