Upto now, drivers for ATI cards have been known to be slow. However, things have changed in the recent days. AMD just recently released a new driver for ATI cards. You may want to try that if you haven't done so already at http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux/linux-radeonhd.html

AMD has now also released specs for an open source driver and is working with Novell to make a driver based on these specs. They say we can expect a release of an open source driver next week already.

So if you want to try any of these new drivers, look for a version for Ubuntu in the nearest future.

To reset xorg.conf with your new configuration:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

...or just the important parts:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Hi,

I had a similar problem with slow graphics when viewing internet videos (Youtube etc.) in full-screen, using an Nvidea card. To solve this, it was just a case of activating the graphics driver in Ubuntu by simply going to System - Administration - Additional Drivers and activating the driver.

Hope this helps.

:-)
