Grub error17 at booting Pc

Asked by esther

I did installed Ubuntu 6 into hardrive, but I can't reboot without Live Cd. Reports Grub error 17 and stops.
I'm guessing it is a problem with the partitions. Should I reinstall CD?
I don't have any experience with any other OS but Windows. Can you suggest where I can get a good info how to work with Linux -Ubuntu OS?
Thankyou

Grub error 17 is something to do with filesystems. It could be something to do with the way BIOS reports your hard drives apparently.

I don't know if https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto is any help.

Good Luck.

Boot from liveCD and edit your menu.lst on your existing linux partition.
You can easyly do this with chroot

I get the same error message. I'd hate to have to repartititon the entire hard drive as I have data I would like to save on the disk. As is, I can't even get to it to save it!
Somebody help, please!
By-the-way, what is "chroot,"?
Alex

Hi,
This error appears because a problem was created at the time of System
Installation and Partitions allocations. Personal experience...copy your
data on Cd's, Dvd or external Hard drive and reinstall Ubuntu, but
before.......
If you don't have experience with any other Linux OS and you have not
read all the set up instructions I recommend you do it. Plane your
partitions and booting. Check this handy advice on this link,
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/index
and follow the clever steps on their side panel. Don't panic and
persevere. It is easy and very rewarding.
Wish you good luck,
