Before installing Ubuntu v7.04 alternate install CD, spent 3 weeks attempting to install the standard Ubuntu v7.04 CD. Just a thought, would that CD have the sound card and video drivers I need? If YES, what app should I use to seek those drivers from the CD? If NO please ignore the question. Thank you.

Tried a few things to change screen resolution.

Dell has F1-F12 serving dual functions. Bottom row on laptop keyboard contains Ctrl, Fn, ms windows key, Alt, spacebar, etc.

Hit Fn held down with (all one button)-F8/CRT/LCD. That shrunk the screen size down to about 60% and placed it on the top left view on the flat screen.

Next hit Fn held down with F7/Font key. Brings real estate back to 97% with black bar both on bottom and right hand side of the screen.

Did full shutdown, power up. Came back to same 800x600. The screen displays a black bar both on the bottom and right hand side. MS windows always took 100% of the screen real estate. Ubuntu takes 97% of screen real estate.

Went into CMOS and verified BIOS settings are correct.

Hoping for help from wonderful Ubuntu community. Thank you, Dave, green bay, wisconsin

Formatted internal hard drive 6-GB. Blew away partitions and table. Did clean install Ubuntu Feisty Fawn CD.

Noticed during install--instead of selecting "generic Linux kernal", I selected (not sure exact wording) "generic Linux kernal v2.x.x.x".

Message window popped up. Said (again, not sure of wording) "kernel (and/or) packages install failed. Will try up to 5 times".

Choices were Go Back and Continue. I hit Go Back a couple times but it kept going back to same message "...failed. Will try up to 5 times".

I let it sit still on that popup window. The hard drive continued to thrash for nearly an hour. Waited until there was no HD activity and hit "Continue". After that the rest of the install went fine.

Back to exact same issue. No sound card detected -and- Dell laptop screen resolution unable to go beyond 800x600.

Patiently waiting for help from Ubuntu community. Hope this helps others in the process. Thank you, Dave, Green Bay, WI
