New working Toshiba Laptop after Ubuntu install has NO power on two USB hubs
I have NO Power on my USB ports now. Both my standard optical usb mouse and my wireless mouse do not work.
This is a new laptop running windows 7 that I just installed Ubuntu on. The lights do not come on on either device indicating no power. I'm able to use the built in slider pad for mouse, but this stinks... What now? Thanks!

For what I know, each USB device detected should get at least 100mA.
Can you confirm you have at same time:
- no power indicator on devices (mouse and keyboard)
- both devices detected by Ubuntu (lsusb) ?

I do not know what this is showing, but I would guess two usb busses.
In case it is not clear, everything has always functioned in Windows 7.
No change with the newest patches applied.

the reference to windows was that alll hardware works there fine.
After more research, I decide to try two options.
1. I tested USB on a Ubuntu trial run from the CD. Same results. NO POWER on devices.
2. I loaded 64 bit Ubuntu. Same results. No Power.
During boot up, I get the red lights to come on in the Logitech USB mouse, and they stay on until after the login password. Then when Ubuntu is loading more program info the power goes off.
More Ideas please?
I appreciate everyone's help so far.
I'm going to try to resolve the wireless next while waiting for more help on the usb.

I have also plugged several other USB devices into different USB ports and no lights come on. I do get a momentary light and beep from my card reader, but it never stays on like it should. When I plug in my Ipod, it displays "charging please wait" very dimly and only show a small amount of charge guessing a value of 20 percent in the battery, which goes out when I unplug the usb plug. It appears there is some voltage there, but it also appears software does not correctly recognize it as the device manager shows USB Version ??????.?? connected at ??????.?? Mbit/s.

I've spent most of the day trying all the different suggestions to install/configure the wireless network with no luck. I would get unlisted errors at various stages, so I have no idea what processes actually finished, and what did not. I do know that there is no wireless network configured, and I am unable to configure one. I guess I can scratch enabling wireless off the list for linux as it it too hard and will not work out of the box. If no one can answer the USB problem either, then I guess I'll write off linux and too hard for out of the box usb also.

I ask myself if current Linux kernel has problems with your motherboard.
1) When Grub runs (i.e. when you are asked to choose between Windows and Ubuntu), can you use the keyboard and mouse ?
2) When you installed Ubuntu, did you use the keyboard and mouse ?
3) When you use Ubuntu Live-CD, can you use the keyboard and mouse ?
4) Do you have many Linux kernels available at Grub ? If yes, try another kernel.
If my questions looks "stupid", it means I don't understand the situation. In this case, can you make a summary of history since installation and current situation.

No problem.
This is a Toshiba Satellite A505 S6020 so slightly beefier than this stock model.
http://
It has been running fine so all hardware works. Built in finger mouse pad (which is all I can use in Linux) and keyboard.
I plug in a Microsoft wireless mouse which has a usb receiver and works fine on several computers.
I downloaded Ubuntu, burnt a CD and loaded it. I have dual boot which now has 6 Ubuntu choices. 3 images and 2 grubs each.
First image I downloaded on wireless on this laptop. Second image I downloaded on LAN from my desktop (thinking this first image may have been flawed.) Third image is the 64 bit image which I realized I did not have and perhaps needed because it is a 64 bit machine.
On Power up, with an externally plugged in USB mouse, I get the red laser light during the grub choice, but it does not function.
I now get a root or terminal type login screen next and the power goes off. No user name/password combo of my user has worked yet, and the message also includes tty01. Then I now get a USB error for each of the USB channels. This only started happening since adding the 64 bit image and after the first load of updates. So perhaps something in the software is alarming it has a usb problem?
Eventually I do get Ubuntu to start and I get the usual login screen.
Next question I have is can I get rid of one of the sets of grubs (like the first)?
I think the second grub with each is recovery mode. I just realized I never did try that before. Trying that I see the usb error is
"usb 1-1: device not acceptiing address 3, error -110 //address 4 // 5
usb 2-1; device not accepting address 2.3.4.5, error -110
hub 2-0:1.0 unable to enumerate usb device on port 1"
This time I got the login on tty01 and it took my user name/password. This leaves me at a terminal prompt. No GUI.
Any way of getting rid of this login prompt during boot and just loading Unbuntu GUI?

It seems that during boot of Linux kernel, it tries to enumerate the devices on USB bus, it see at least one device but fails to give it an address.
If it fails with both mouse, it can't be a mouse problem.
So I think the kernel is unable to manage USB chip on motherboard.
Wireless problem is yet known on "Toshiba Satellite A505" (Realtek RTL8172/8192)
-------
On the Web, this computer is a nightmare for all Linux Distro.
Only one happy guy, who installed alpha version of Lucid (10.4).
Usually, I will not advise you to use alpha version, but I presume your hardware is very new, and is only managed by last Ubuntu version.
So you can download alpha Lucid at http://
or wait a little the official 10.04 next month.

Thanks very much. I can easily wait a month. If desperate, I'll load Lucid.
