sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get --reinstall install gzip

may help

can you also give the output of:

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

as well as:

lsb_release -a

Thanks

If you want to claw back some space I suggest bleachbit (just avoid the options which say they will take a long time and close as many apps as you ca to increase effectiveness, also watch your firefox settings if you use firefox)

You can also uninstall old unused kernels to get a lot of space back as well as removing unnecessary apps you don't use

Can you help with this problem?
