Unmount and Safely Remove drive

Hi
Ive got a external drive which i use with Ubuntu 9.10. According to properties, the filesystem type is msdos (microsoft format?).
Not sure if this is relevant but when disconnecting the drive, in addition to the normal 'unmount' option, there is also a option for 'safely remove drive'. Which of these options is safer before disconnecting the drive from my pc?
