Hallo

Oh oh this is english question right?

also Have you installed the ttf-freefont package? I think they are supposed
to be the replacement for commercial fonts in Ubuntu and the they
support an extraordinary wide range of characters, including non-Latin
characters and non-European languages. If you don't like the kerning
there's also the ttf-bitstream-vera package providing high-quality
fonts.

Then you click on view -> Charecter encoding and choose unicode (if you are on mozilla) works out for me..

Gruss

Bhavani Shankar.

On a related question: to get Umlaute & other characters, in Windows, I type [ALT] 129 to get a "ü" for example. This works in all the windows programs I tried including Open Office and Thunderbird. In Ubuntu this does not work. To use the character insert feature is rather cumbersone. Is there a quicker way to do so?

I tried creating a macro, but have not been able to set up a quick way to trigger it, e.g.such as using [Control] u. And the macro would not be an option in Thunderbird, I gather.

I apologize if I'm asking questions too elementary for this forum, but I'm just starting out in this. If I should not be asking here, perhaps you can point me to a beginners' forum.
