Is there a 3.0 build planned for Artful?

Asked by Filip Procházka

I'm currently compiling from source and would love to be able to just install it. Works great otherwise. Thanks!

There may be a PPA here
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=guake

Remember to filter each PPA for Artful.

If you report a bug and the bug and security fixes are significant then the package will be updated sooner rather than later.

Yeah, they're all old or dead. I'd prefer having an official build, since it already exists for The Bionic Beaver.

Packages in a stable release like 17.10 are normally not updated unless there's an important bug fix. However, it is possible to request a backport of a package, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBackports#Requesting_a_Backport for more details.

I had a quick look at the dependencies of guake 3.0 in bionic, and I see that some of the required package versions are not available on artful, e.g. gir1.2-gtk-3.0 (>= 3.22.26), python3-gi (>= 3.26.1)

So it seems that a backport of guake 3.0 would require updates or backports of other packages first.

With the limited remaining lifetime of artful (will be EOL in July) and the upcoming publication of bionic (April) I doubt that there will be a 3.0 version of guake.

What is in guake 3.0 that you need so badly? It is a simple application. What is new?

The gnome shell of 17.10. and guake 0.8 are kind of broken together. It underflows the top panel making the first line of the terminal hidden by the system UI. I have not found any solution to fix this and it was really funky for some reason - random resizing and maximalization when toggling visible/hidden with F12.

With guake 3.0, it behaves as expected (maximalization only when requested, holds the configured relative position) and it has a setting for adding a margin on top, so the first line is visible again.

I must admin I first tried to use guake 0.8 with wayland and now I'm using guake 3.0 with Xorg and I havent found the settings for the margin with guake 0.8. It may also be all related to me having 3 monitors (notebook and two external, where the two external have different resolution).

Also, I don't really want to remove the compiled guake 3.0 and try it again with 0.8 to verify if it's broken with Xorg, since it wasn't completely straight forward to compile and install the 3.0 and I'm just happy it works right now.

If it's too much work I get it (as an OSS maintainer myself). I don't really need it in the repository. I would prefer not having to compile it but this is fine too.

Can you help with this problem?
