Hi,
VNC client requires VNC server running on your Windows XP machine. If you don't have VNS server there, you should use native Windows protocole rdp, e.g. terminal services client. Install package gnome-rdp and you will be able to connect.
This also requires to allow remote connections on Windows box.

Yeah, the good news is Ubuntu supports both protocols - VNC (the open-source one) and RDP (the microsoft one) but RDP is already on your XP machine. Simply go into the Applications menu > Internet > Terminal Services Client, pop in your XP machine's IP address. If it ain't working RDP may be disabled in XP (a default setting). Right-click My Computer > Properties > "Remote" tab > tick the box that says "Allow other people to connect to..." > Apply > Try again!

I am awesome, thanks! As is Tomas who was right about VNC server...

I meant to say it was called "Terminal Server Client". That's what it's called in Gnome, under the Applications menu, if you ever want to launch it from the terminal or command line it's called "ts-client".
