unable to update/install gtk-gnutella ancient version

Asked by pat

I was running Karmic koala, then I started with Natty Narwhale. OS runs great, but gtk-gnutella is ancient version. I am not able to update it, nor can I upgrade it. I simply can't find any clear instructions that work for me. Am I alone in my search for some useful information on gtk-gnutella? The version I can't install is gtk-gnutella-0.96.9, since that is the one needed. I finally did manage to get it installed on Mint 10, but it constantly nags me about being an ancient version too! And, it simply won't connect. What am I doing wrong, or is GTKG being abandoned? Is there a solution for this? Thank you for linux, all flavors are good

According to http://gtk-gnutella.sourceforge.net/en/?page=news they just today released the new 0.97

From the Ubuntu sources you can only install 0.96.8-1 (see http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/gtk-gnutella)
I did not find a higher version in any Ubuntu ppa.

The version on Debian is also 0.96.8-1.
A request to provide the 0.96.9 in Debian has already been made http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=619091

On http://sourceforge.net/projects/gtk-gnutella/files/gtk-gnutella/0.97/ the brand new version is also available in .deb format, you could try to install that one.

Hi there. thanks for replying to my quandary. I ran the 'lsb_release -a' and
this is the output:

-home ~ $ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: LinuxMint
Description: Linux Mint 10 Julia
Release: 10
Codename: julia

A couple of other folks from Launchpad replied also, and one suggestion that
I install v. .97 seems like it has promise. I will try it and let you know
how it goes. Thanks again from a mintidiot. ;-)

Whoa, that blew me away. I downloaded 97 stable, hit what I thought wasthe
install icon in the ~/gnutella/usr/bin folder in my home folder, and BAM!!!
GTKG is up and running. Not an installer at all! Neat Surprise, and good
news to boot. Nice work, I knew I shouldn'a skipped programming so much back
in the day. And the speed is great, never been so good. I am humbled. thank
you.

Mint isn't supported here. In future please post on

You are not using Ubuntu, you are using Mint. This is Ubuntu support ONLY

Sorry about that. So, this should work for Ubuntu as well. Great, 'cause it
was UBUNTU that got me started looking for a reasonable solution to
update/upgrade GTKG in the first place. But thanks for helping me, the
mintidiot.
